Are credit cards accepted?
At the school we don’t accept credit cards. In town, only a few restaurants accept credit cards, and only one supermarket in Montañita does.
Do I need a visa to go to Ecuador?
If you plan to stay in Ecuador for 90 days or less, most travelers do not need a visa.
This applies to citizens of many countries, including the US, Canada, the EU, and Australia.
If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for an extension or a visa at the Ecuadorian immigration office.
Also, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

Do I need vaccines and immunization?
There is no compulsory requirement to enter Ecuador. Speak to your travel doctor before your Latin American trip and give plenty of time to allow for any immunizations or preventive medications you may need. Check with the CDC for more information.
What is the best time to come to Montañita?
The weather is warm year-round. December to April is the sunny season, perfect for beach and outdoor activities.
What is the currency in Ecuador?
Ecuador uses the US Dollar and is very much a cash society. Bring lowest denominations $1, $5, $10, $20. Anything over $20 may not be accepted.
Living in Montañita
Is there Internet?
Internet and cell phone communications are widely available in Ecuador, with the exception of the Amazon basin and very remote areas. The school provides free WiFi access, and WiFi is also available in our accommodations, including Hostel Montañita Cabañas and family homestays.
What is the electricity in Ecuador?
Ecuador uses 110 volts and 60 Hz electricity, which is the same as in the United States. Plugs are usually Type A and Type B, so you may need an adapter if your devices use a different plug type.
Where can I stay?
Most students stay at our student hostel Montañita Cabañas, which has a jacuzzi, a pool, garden, and security. For a more local experience, stay with one of our homestay families in a private room with half board – a great way to practice Spanish and experience daily life in Montañita!
Learning Spanish with us
Do I need to know Spanish before I come?
No, you don’t need to know Spanish. Our school welcomes beginners, and lessons start at your level.
Do you provide textbooks or materials?
Yes, all students receive learning materials included in the course price.
What is the school schedule like?
Our group classes are 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Optional cultural activities are available in the afternoons and evenings.
Private classes offer flexible scheduling between 8:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00.
Surf culture and activities
Do I need to rent a surfboard for the surf class?
No, the surfboard is included in the price and provided during the surf class.
Do you organize cultural or social activities?
Yes! Optional activities include surfing, salsa classes, Spanish conversation meetups, cocktail workshops, cooking classes, and local tours.

What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Postponing your booking: You can postpone without extra fee within one year from the original date.
More than 31 days before your stay: Only $20 registration fee.

14 to 8 days before your stay: 75% of total price.
7 to 1 day before your stay: 100%, no refund.

What happens if I’m the only one in the group class?
20-hour group class:
Group classes require a minimum of 3 students. If there are fewer than 3 students, the schedule will be adjusted as follows:
– 2 students: 15 hours of semi-private classes
– 1 student: 15 hours of private classes
15-hour group class:
Group classes require a minimum of 3 students. If there are fewer than 3 students, the schedule will be adjusted as follows:
– 2 students: 11 hours of semi-private classes
– 1 student: 11 hours of private classes
